Hackberry Hill

Hackberry Hill is one of Arvada's North subdivisions, located to the east of Wadsworth Boulevard and the Indian Tree Golf Course, offering easy access to all parts of the Denver Metro area. According to Wikipedia, here is how Hackberry Hill received its name: "At the top of a hill was the site of a lone hackberry tree which served as a landmark to early explorers and settlers in the region. The tree was unusual, both for its location, since the only other scattered trees in the area grew next to water, and because hackberry trees were not native to the region. As a result, there were a variety of stories to explain the origin of the tree, including a Native American legend that a great chief had been buried there along with a medicine bag containing hackberry seeds."

Hackberry Hill Elementary School is one of the top-rated elementary schools for both Jefferson County and the State of Colorado. The School offers Elementary level Spanish class, Orchestra and Chess Clubs, and the Gifted and Talented programs are superior in content. This neighborhood school might be an excellent choice for parents wanting more out of a school for their children. Hackberry Hill Park, the elementary and middle school are all close-knit and within walking distance to the majority of the community.

Cookbook Event with Brian Polcyn & Michael Ruhlman
StartMay 19
EndMay 19
Ticket price includes a copy of Pâté, Confit, Rillette + food samples from recipes in the book.  In Pâté, Confit, Rillette, Brian Polcyn and Michael Ruhlman provide a comprehensive guide to the most elegant and accessible branch of the charcuterie tradition. There is arguably nothing richer and more flavorful than a slice of pâté de foie gras, especially when it’s spread onto crusty bread. Anyone lucky enough to have been treated to a duck confit, poached and preserved in its own fat, or a pâté en croute, knows they’re impossible to resist.  And yet, pâtés, confits, rillettes, and similar dishes featured in this book were developed in the pursuit of frugality. Butchers who didn’t want to waste a single piece of the animals they slaughtered could use these dishes to serve and preserve them. In so doing, they founded a tradition of culinary alchemy that transformed lowly cuts of meat into culinary gold. Polcyn and Ruhlman begin with crucial instructions about how to control temperature and select your ingredients to ensure success, and quickly move on to master recipes, offering the fundamental ratios of fat, meat, and seasoning, which will allow chefs to easily make their own variations. The recipes that follow span traditional dishes and modern inventions, featuring a succulent chicken terrine embedded with sautéed mushrooms and flecked with bright green herbs; modern rillettes of shredded salmon and whitefish; classic confits of duck and goose; and a vegetarian layered potato terrine. Pâté, Confit, Rillette is the book to reach for when a cook or chef intends to explore these timeless techniques, both the fundamentals and their nuances, and create exquisite food. Brian Polcyn is the former chef/owner of Forest Grill and Five Lakes Grill, among other Detroit area restaurants, and he is a professor of charcuterie at Schoolcraft College in Michigan.  Michael Ruhlman is the best-selling author of The Soul of a Chef, Ratio, and other books. Together they are the authors of Charcuterie and Salumi.

The Chief Medical Officer’s Physical Activity Guidelines 2018 Update: Implementation, Insights and Implications – Dr Andy Pringle
StartMay 22
EndMay 22
The Chief Medical Officer’s Physical Activity Guidelines 2018 Update: Implementation, Insights and Implications – Dr Andy Pringle  The current UK physical activity guidelines were published by the Chief Medical Officers (CMOs) in 2011 and offer evidence-based recommendations for physical activity. In 2018 a decision was taken to review the guidance and provide updated practical public health guidelines and the development of potential implementation pathways for all groups, from healthcare to communication professionals.   During 2018, six Expert Working Groups (EWGs) worked with key national stakeholders to review the current guidelines and present new recommendations to the four UK CMOs based upon the latest scientific evidence. The EWGs were made up of UK and international experts in the field, covering four age ranges of UK physical activity guidelines (under 5s, children and young people aged 6 to 18, adults aged 19 to 64, and older adults aged 65 plus), plus new groups for sedentary behavior across the life course and Implementation and Surveillance.   Dr Andy Pringle was appointed to the Expert Working Group for Implementation and Surveillance.      This is the first time that a Leeds Beckett Academic has been appointed to this role and it is also the first time Implementation was included in the Review of the Physical Activity Guidelines.   The 2018 update is currently planned for publication in 2019, so the purpose of this seminar is to NOT to provide an overview of the updated recommendations for physical activity.  The aim of this seminar is to share the process by which the 2018 Review was undertaken, insights and reflections from the EWG for Implementation & Surveillance/the 2018 Review and to share some of the potential implications of the CMO Guidance for research, practice and our curriculum.  Further information on the 2018 update can be found here https://www.bristol.ac.uk/sps/research/projects/current/physical-activity/ : Chair: Dr Stephen Zwolinsky
